A Hyperrealistic Anatomical Forearm Dissection Using Historical Methods For Future Reference
Flayed to Display ‘’ uses the art of lost wax casting and its properties of capturing highly realistic details as a way to provide an alternative resource that can challenge the likeness seen in Pernkof’s illustrations. The level of thoroughness consistent throughout the atlas contributes to its modern significance in the medical field. When this level of intricacy is matched in a morally ethical way with the same standard of realism, then The Pernkopf Atlas may be laid to rest. This dissertation uses traditional techniques to build a hyper-realistic forearm dissection model. The objective is to provide a resource for medical professionals and students that can compete with The Pernkopf Atlas in terms of precision and level of detail. The use of beeswax as a medium allows for a level of realism not possible with other mouldable mediums. The model can be used to teach medical students about human anatomy in a more complete way and help to remove some of the ethical dilemmas surrounding the use of historical illustrations as a medical resource.
