Polycystic Kidney

Polycystic Kidney Disease, PKD, is a form of chronic kidney disease found to be one of the most common genetic disorders. PKD affects 1 in every 400-1,000 people in the world, with 1 in 20,000 children!

A gene mutation, from parent to child, causes PKD. Which causes fluid-filled sacs to grow in the kidneys. These sacs are also known as cysts, and the growth of this sacs can change the shape and size of the kidney. While at the moment there is no cure for this disorder, there are medications that can help manage and reduce the growth of these cysts.

This 3D sculpted model shows the juxtaposition of a normal kidney and a kidney with polycystic kidney disease. Both of these kidneys were created in Pixologic Zbrush and rendered out in Keyshot. The animation seen to the right, was created using Adobe After Effects.
